What’s Happening at the Square

For over 30 years, Pioneer Courthouse Square has been a place for us to gather in Portland, and come together as a community. Each year, there are over 300 events made possible via generous sponsors throughout Portland, to help support the Squares mission, which is to activate and enrich the environment of the City of Portland’s central public park and gathering space for the benefit of Portland’s community members and visitors.

Since we still several summer days ahead of us, we wanted to put together a list of some fun, family and budget friendly events planned in the square.

Scooperfest –  07/20 -07/21  11 – 8 An ALL you can eat ice cream event! Ice cream will be on hand from dozens of the regions best creameries. Even better, children under 2 eat FREE! Let’s also not forget about the 30′ waterside!

Noon Tunes Summer Concert Series –  Each Tuesday through the end of August, from 12- 1 there are FREE concerts in the square! Enjoy the sun, relax and listen to some local musical talent!

Meditation Mondays  –  Each Monday through the end of August, from 12:30 – 1:00 pm, join Pause Meditation for a FREE 30 minute meditation session in the square. You are encouraged to bring your own yoga mat or pillow.

Flicks on the Bricks – Throughout July and August, the Square transforms itself into Portland’s LARGEST outdoor move theater! Admission is FREE!

Wellness Wednesdays – Every Wednesday there is a different free activity centered around wellness. From free painting sessions, to a fun zumba class there is something for everyone.

2019 Chinese Festival – 08/03 11:00 – 9:00 – Celebrate Chinese American culture and enjoy nonstop entertainment, delicious food, authentic arts and crafts and so much more!

2019 Pan African Festival 08/10 12:00 – 8:30  – This festival celebrates the presence, resilience, strength and influence of Pan Africans in Oregon. The day will be full of live music, dance, education, career awareness and more for people to get involved and take action to help solve problems in their community.

So grab your family and friends, and head down to the square to enjoy the rest of your summer! Don’t forget to stop in and say hi to your credit union on the way – we are just 5 blocks East of the square on the corner of 1st and Taylor.

Q&A: Take a Tour of Waterfront Bikes

This May, we’ve partnered with Waterfront Bikes, a local Portland bike shop, to help you ‘gear up’ for National Bike Month. Most PDXers know this local shop, but did you also know they’re family-owned AND family-run? Our Q&A session with shop owner Karen Stiles gives a quick tour of a Portland bike shop that sets itself apart with lots of options and friendly, personalized service (sound familiar?).

How long has Waterfront Bikes been in business?
We have been in business for 16 years.

Can you tell us a little bit about your store?
We are a small, friendly shop located on the downtown waterfront. We service the local community selling new and used bikes and repairing almost every type of bicycle. We are also very busy with folks visiting our city, as we have a complete line of rental bikes. We enjoy talking bikes, and rides, and always enjoy helping people navigate the city by bike. We have recently started doing some exclusive small tours that really focus on the Wine Country.

What are some of the benefits of purchasing a bike with Waterfront Bikes?
We are a local family-owned shop and so we really know our customers. Every bike is built and assembled with care and fitted for comfort. Each new bike purchase comes with 10% off any additional gear. We also include a free yearly tune-up (excluding parts) which adds to the value of your purchase and keeps the bike in good working order.

What do you love about bikes?
I love that bikes allow you to really explore places in ways that are all-encompassing. You can ride many miles in a day, or just take in a few, and learn so much about places. I love that bikes are green and that interconnectedness with the world is enhanced while riding on a physical level too. I love that you move fast enough to get somewhere but slow enough to see and hear new things that you wouldn’t experience in a car.

What’s your favorite local bike ride?
I love the East Side Neighborhood ride. It allows me to explore the neighborhoods at my leisure stopping at fun locations for a cup of tea, bite to eat, or a beer. Its fun to feel the city at a cycling pace and see and hear all the local activities. Riding into parks along the way–sometimes through Laurelhurst Park or up Mt Tabor–is always so relaxing. It’s just a great way to spend the day!

Rose Festival Fleet Week

USACU Hosts a Booth, June 5th – 7th

Isn’t it the best time of year in Portland, OR? Our backyard here in downtown is transformed with music, food, and all sorts of events during The Rose Festival.

This year we are jumping aboard and hosting a booth in honor of Fleet Week. We’ll be camped out near the entrance to the ship tours from 10am – 4pm Friday, June 5th – Sunday, June 7th just north of the Burnside Bridge near NW Couch. Stop by our booth for a photo op, free gifts, and just to say “hi.” Then take a tour on one or more of the many ships that will be docked along the waterfront.

Learn more about Fleet Week and we hope to see you there!
